 Getting Around

There are 3 different ways to travel around the island...

Many people choose to use a taxi service.  Private taxis seem to always charge $10 US per person each way.  This can prove to be fairly costly for a family but it is door-to-door service and quite prompt.

Others opt for taking the local “bus” – an open-air vehicle that drives around the island, often in one direction.  It is very inexpensive ($1-2 US per person), and if you are in no hurry it is a great way to see the island and meet some locals.  We do not recommend the local busses after dark as you will not be familiar with your stop location and may get lost.  VITrans also operates busses that run an established route between Red Hook and Charlotte Amalie and also between Charlotte Amalie west to the University of the Virgin Islands.

The vast majority of tourists decide to rent a vehicle.  We have had great experiences with Avis, Hertz, and Budget – all have counters in the airport.

The island of St. Thomas is perfectly situated to provide a wealth of activities to everyone!

Paradise is very centrally located on the sunny southern shore.  A 15-minute drive to the west will bring you to Charlotte Amalie - the capital of the USVI and a duty-free shopping mecca.  Fifteen minutes in the opposite direction is Red Hook - great dining, ferries to St. John and the BVI, and charter boats.  Drive 15 minutes from Paradise into the center of the island and you will arrive at Tutu Park Mall - home of a very nice Kmart (with its' very low liquor prices) and a mall full of shops!

Looking for Duty Free bargains in Charlotte Amalie

With jewelry leading the long list of things to buy you will be able to save anywhere from 30% to 70% in the USVI depending on what you are looking for. Topping the list are; perfume, liquor, tobacco, cameras and electronics, crystal and china, designer leather and linens. There's no sales tax so add that to your savings!

Pop into galleries featuring works by local artists.  Take a water taxi to Hassel Island or Water Island for the great hiking, biking,  and nearly private beaches.  Conquer your fear of heights while riding the tram up to Paradise Point (or save $$ by driving up).  Stop for the authentic Caribbean food at Cuzzin's or Glady's.  Charlotte Amalie is rich in history - go on a self-guided walking tour.

 ST. JOHN, USVI

The 20-30 minute ferry ride will deliver you to Cruz Bay, St. John.  It won't take long to understand why Mr. Rockefeller wanted this island gem preserved in its' natural beauty.  Hike to the Annenberg Plantation or up to see the ancient petroglyphs.  Visit the unique shops in Mongoose Junction.  See if Kenny Chesney is tending bar at Woody's.  If you have a car, beach hop.  Everyone has his own favorite stretch of sand on St. John.  Find yours!

 THE NORTH SHORE

Mahogany Run golf course

The North Shore features Mahogany Run - a championship golf course designed by George and Tom Fazio.  Not a golfer?  Many non-golfers rent golf carts simply to view the scenery!

Families will delight at all of the sea creatures found at Coral World.  Just outside the Coral World entrance is Coki Beach, a marvelous place to see 100s of fish just off shore.  Pack the snorkel gear, water camera and large dog biscuits - the fish will eat right from your hand!

THE RED HOOK AREA

At anchor outside the harbor

A trip to Red Hook provides more shopping opportunities.  It is also where you will find the passenger and car ferries to St. John.  Take a walk around American Yacht Harbor and oogle at the amazing yachts, sailboats and fishing boats.  Sign up for a day of fishing or a day sail to the B.V.I. ( passport IS necessary).  Have a scrumptious Sunday Brunch at Molly Malone's.  Just beyond Red Hook is the entrance to Sapphire Beach - the bluest water on St. Thomas.  Pack up the beach supplies provided in your villa and spend a day touring the many beaches.  Continue around the island to Magen's Bay - named one of the Ten Most Beautiful Beaches in the World.  Too crowded?  Grab a milkshake at Udder Delite then become an explorer and find Hull Bay or Little Magen's Bay (President Clinton's favorite spot).

Determined to spend your day limin" (island speak for "relaxing")?  Go no further than our own slice of Paradise on Bolongo Bay Beach.  Grab a book and find a beachside hammock.  When you decide to get wet, take a dip in the sea or our oceanfront fresh water pool.  Mosey over to the Bolongo Bay Beach Resort and arrange for a massage or a sunset catamaran cruise.  If that is more planning than you care to do, walk up to the cliff side pool and watch the cruise ships sail to their next port of call as the sun sets.  Dine at one of the three oceanfront restaurants (Mim's, Iggie's, The Lobster Grille), then join the evening fun at Iggie's.  A full day and you never left Bolongo Bay!
